HOLDEN - Zygmont "Ziggy"H. Kaczmarek, 91, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 under the loving care of his family and the compassionate staff at Oakdale Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in West Boylston. Born and raised in Chelsea, Ziggy was the son of Walter and Sophie (Gozdon) Kaczmarek and lived over 60 years in Holden.
His wife of 44 years, Pauline A. (Milone) Kaczmarek died in 1999. Ziggy will be lovingly remembered and missed by his sons, Gary M. Kaczmarek and his wife, Diana of Jefferson and Edward Kaczmarek and his wife, Darlene of Worcester; four grandchildren, Brian Kaczmarek and his wife, Vanessa of Ft. Worth, Texas, Andrew Kaczmarek of Wrentham and Michael Skog of Connecticut. Besides his wife, he is predeceased by a grandson, Chad Skog.
Ziggy attended Chelsea High School where he played varsity baseball and football. He honorably served his country in the Asiatic Pacific Theater during World War II in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. He was a gunner aboard the battleship USS Missouri and was present at the surrender of the Empire of Japan which ended World War II. He worked many years driving 18 wheelers for several local companies including Holmes Transportation. After his retirement, Ziggy worked carpentry and construction with his son, Gary. He was a member of Local Teamsters Union #170.
He enjoyed playing golf with his son, Gary and close friends into his mid 80's at both Holden Hills Golf Course and Wachusett Country Club. Ziggy was also an avid New England sports fan.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Ziggy's family from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, January 12, at Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. A Mass of Christian Burial will Celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 14, at St. Mary's Church, 114 Princeton St., Jefferson. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 260 Cochituate Rd., #200, Framingham, MA 01701.
