HOLDEN – Bertel W. Soderberg, 81, of 100 Chapel Street, died peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on Monday, February 19, 2007, after a long illness
His wife of 51 years, Elsie M. (Brunzell) died in 1997. He leaves his son, Robert C. Soderberg and his wife Karen of Rutland; a daughter, Donna M. Forsman and her husband Carl of Jefferson; two sisters, Constance Crotteau of Portage, Michigan and Eunice Barry of Worcester; four grandchildren, Carl, Eric, Ian and Haley Soderberg; many nephews and nieces. His brother, Carl Soderberg and his sister, Elsa Anderson, predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of Carl M. and Maria J. (Anderson) Soderberg, and lived in Holden most of his life. He was a graduate of Worcester Boys Trade.
Mr. Soderberg was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II serving in the Asiatic Pacific theatre as part of the 317th Troop Carrier Group. This group, known as the “Jungle Skippers”, were prominent in all airborne operations on Corregidor Island and Aparri in Northern Luzon. He was awarded four bronze stars and received a Distinguished Unit Badge. He worked for the Holden School Department retiring in 1994. Previously he worked at U.S. Envelope Co. in Worcester. He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church and the Rufus Putnam Lodge of Masons in Rutland.
The funeral service for Mr. Soderberg will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, February 22, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Burial will be private in All Faith’s Cemetery, 7 Island Road, Worcester. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.
