Biography
WORCESTER - Wolf Bergman, 89, a Holocaust survivor, passed away on Monday, October 13, 2014.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 65 years, Pola (Aron) Bergman in 2010. He is survived by his children, Shirley, wife of Philip Katz of Worcester, Samuel and his wife, Marsha of Newton, Michael and his wife Merle of Newton and Morris (Moe) and his wife Wendy of Worcester; and twelve grandchildren, Sheri (Scott), Josh (Katie), Jenna (Joe), Rebekah, Jacob, Max, Sarah, Micah, Faith, Victoria, Abbie and Hanna; and a great-grandchild, Alexander.
He was born in Warsaw, Poland, the youngest son of Samuel and Miriam (Goldman) Berkman. His parents, grandparents, all four siblings, and dozens of cousins were murdered in the Holocaust-he was the sole family survivor. During the early years of the Nazi occupation of Poland, he and his family were interned in the Warsaw Ghetto, where he contributed to the Jewish resistance by smuggling weapons in and out of the ghetto. He was amongst the last group of Jewish people to be captured during the Nazi liquidation of the Warsaw Ghetto.
He survived three concentration camps including Majdanek Death Camp. Upon liberation of the United States Army, he met our mother in a displaced persons camp in Lodz, Poland where they married in October of 1945. She too was sole survivor of her family.
Arriving in Worcester in 1949, dad made the most of his second chance at life, always working hard and starting his own business - Custom Built Aluminum Manufacturing. His greatest joy was providing for his family.
We are humbled and honored to have been his children and grandchildren. We would to thank the Jewish Healthcare Center, particularly the nurses and aides for the exemplary care of dad during the last 10 years.
