PAXTON-William R. Mortell, Sr., 82, of Paxton, died peacefully at home on Sunday, May 18, 2014, surrounded by his loving family.
Bill was born in Chicopee, son of the late Mary (Mortell) Haire and later lived in Worcester and Charlton, where he graduated from Charlton High School with the class of 1951. He has lived in Paxton since 1960. He was a proud Navy veteran of the Korean War.
Bill was the beloved husband of Susan E. (Goodman) Mortell. Together, they celebrated 20 years of marriage. Besides his wife, Bill leaves his children, Kathleen A. McCormick and her husband, Kevin of West Boylston, William R. Mortell, Jr. and his wife, Susan of Webster, Jason Nadow of Brookfield and Matthew Nadow of Paxton; his daughter-in-law, Pamela Mortell of Paxton; his sister-in-law, Phyllis Haire of Worcester; his ten grandchildren, Brett, Melissa, Lindsay and Adam Richards, Jessica, Heather and Stephanie Mortell, and Amy, Erin and Elliot Mortell; and his five great-grandchildren. Besides his mother, Bill was predeceased by his first wife, Edith L. (Pontbriand) Mortell; his son, Paxton Police Chief Robert J. Mortell; and his two brothers, John and Roy Haire.
Bill spent more than 40 years as a machinist for Foster Associates of Holden. He loved to ski, and with Susan, skied all over New England, around the US and in Europe, including his last trip to Cortina, Italy. An accomplished painter, Bill created many paintings that have adorned his home for years. He also loved to read and truly enjoyed the time he spent with his family. He was a member of Saint Columba Parish in Paxton.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Bill's family on Wednesday, May 21st from 4-7 pm in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. His funeral will be held on Thursday, May 22nd from the funeral home with a Mass to be celebrated at 10 am in St. Columba Church, 18 Richards Avenue, Paxton. Burial, with Military Honors, will follow in Mooreland Cemetery, Paxton.
