William Andrew Moore

WORCESTER – William Andrew Moore, 79, retired Worcester firefighter and beloved husband of Carol A. (Frende) Moore, passed away peacefully under the loving care of his family, on Friday, November 1, 2013, after an illness. He was born and raised in Worcester the son of Edwin A. and Esther M. (Harmin) Moore and had lived in Worcester his entire life.
Bill graduated from Commerce High School and attended Quinsigamond College, both in Worcester. In 1953 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the 4th Infantry Division during the Korean Conflict. In 1958 he met the love of his life, Carol A. Frende, they married in 1959 and together they raised three wonderful children.
For a short time Bill worked for Astra Pharmaceuticals and the O.S. Walker Corporation. In 1962, Bill began what was his true passion, firefighting. He served the citizens of Worcester, a job he loved and was committed to for 28 years, retiring from the Greendale Station Ladder Company 6 in Worcester in 1992. He was a member of the American Legion Harold N. Keith Post 204 in West Boylston and the Worcester Retired Police & Fire Association. While working as a firefighter, Bill also worked part-time as a house painter and wallpaperer, which he continued well into his retirement. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and taking many trips with his favorite traveling companions, Nick and June Monopoli and Russ and Kay Anderson.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carol A. (Frende) Moore; a son, Brian W. Moore and his wife Cathy of Basking Ridge, NJ; two daughters, Pamela M. Day and her husband Wayne of Bolton and Elizabeth S. Savino and her husband Michael of Holden; four brothers, known as “The Moore Boys”, Robert, Raymond, and Edwin Moore and Richard Moore who predeceased him; six grandchildren, known as “The Magnificent Six”, Brian and Madeline Moore, Toni and Josie Day and Lilly and William Savino; dozens of nieces and nephews, especially Dermott O’Leary and his fiancée Bonnie Jackson and Mike and MaryEllen Moore, with whom he shared a special brotherly bond. He was predeceased by his sister, Agnes “Sis” M. O’leary, with whom he loved to share a cup of tea.
The Moore family would like to thank Gentiva Home Health & Hospice, especially nurses Genevieve and Adeline for the wonderful care provided to Bill during his illness. Additionally, the family would like to thank his doctors and their staff for years of superior care, including Dr. Dennis Tighe, Dr. Doreen Brettler, Dr. Dennis Dimitri and Dr. Howard Alfred.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, November 4, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. The funeral service for Bill will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, November 5 in the funeral home, followed by burial in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Jimmy Fund, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284-9168; or to a charity of one’s choice.
