WORCESTER -- William F. Kelly, 86, formerly of Princeton, passed away peacefully under the loving care of his family and the staff at St. Mary Healthcare Center in Worcester on Friday, May 22, 2015 after an illness.
He leaves his wife of 53 years, Kathleen (Gowell) Kelly; his son, Timothy F. Kelly, and his wife, Sandra of Princeton; his daughter, Erin (Kelly) Novak, and her husband Brian of Oxford; eight grandchildren, Joshua, Bryant, Isaac, and Zachary Algarin, Liam, Autumn Rose, Ciara and Seamus Kelly, all of Princeton; a great granddaughter, Madalena Algarin; and several nieces and nephews.
Born in New York City and raised in Worcester, Bill was the son of the late William J. B. Kelly, and Mary (Walsh) Kelly of Worcester. He graduated from Commerce High School, the Worcester Art Museum, and attended Clark University. He was employed by the former Woodbury and Company as a commercial designer for over 30 years. Bill proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict with the United States Air Force Reserve from 1948 to 1961. He received his private pilot’s license before he was old enough to get his driver’s license.
Bill dedicated his life to the Boy Scouts of America. Including his boyhood scouting, he was a member for over 60 years. He was a Boy Scout achieving the rank of Eagle, Sea Scout, Air Scout Ace, Explorer and went on to continue to serve throughout his life. He served on the Staff at Treasure Valley Scout Reservation. He started a legacy of Eagle Scouts, as is his son, Tim, and his grandsons, Joshua, Zachary and Liam all became Eagle Scouts. His granddaughter Ciara is an active member of the Holden Fire Explorers and grandson Seamus will receive his First Class Rank this month. Bill received many scouting recognitions, including the Silver Beaver. He was previously chairman of the Diocesan Catholic Committee on Scouting, and as a member of numerous National Committees in Scouting. At one time, he was on the Board of Directors of McCauley Nazareth Home in Leicester, and a member of the Diocesan Retirement Fund for Religious Committee.
Bill's family would like to express their deepest appreciation to the staff at both Holden Healthcare and Skilled Nursing Center, and St. Mary Healthcare Center in Worcester, for the compassion and service they so caringly provided over the last several years.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Bill's family from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 28, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. A Funeral Mass celebrating his life will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 29, at Prince of Peace Church, 5 Worcester Rd., Princeton. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Holden. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Nashua Valley Boy Scout Council, 1980 Lunenburg Rd., Lancaster, MA 01523, or McCauley Nazareth Home for Boys, 77 Mulberry St., Leicester, MA 01524.
