WORCESTER – William J. Kennington, 86, of 150 Whitmarsh Avenue, died Tuesday, August 17, 2004, in Umass Memorial after being stricken ill at home.
He leaves his loving wife of 63 years, Bernice S. (Ries) Kennington; three sons, James W. Kennington of Hubbardston, David R. and Paul C. Kennington, both of Oakham; three daughters, Paula F. Parkinson of Sterling, Susan M. Tyck of Oakham, and Elizabeth M. Delaney of Worcester; and 11 grandchildren. A sister, Mary Kennington, predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of Harold J. and Florence (Keyes) Kennington. He graduated from Commerce High School and lived at his present address for the last 48 years.
Mr. Kennington was a paymaster for Norton Company for 30 years, retiring in 1982. He was an Army veteran of World War II serving as a master sergeant in the signal corp where he was a communications operator and plane spotter in Europe. He was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6907 in West Boylston where he was active in organizing many events and dances through the years. He was a member of Our Lady of the Rosary Church. He was an avid reader, a sports enthusiast who loved to keep up with current events and always enjoyed lively discussions. He also loved music, ballroom and polka dancing with his wife, and joining together with friends. He relished family gatherings and sharing stories and adventures with his children and grandchildren.
The funeral service for Mr. Kennington will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 21, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Oakham. Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, August 20, in the funeral home. Please omit flowers.
