WORCESTER – William J. Baxter, Jr., 80, of 44 Walter Street, died at home on Sunday, January 23, 2005, after an illness.
He leaves his wife of 51 years, Gertrude E. (Horan) Baxter; three sons, James W. Baxter and Pamela M. Thornton of Wellesley, John F. Baxter of Chicago, Illinois, and Thomas V. Baxter of Worcester; several nieces and nephews. A sister, Barbara Garner, of Austin, Texas, predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of William J. and Alice R. (Donovan) Baxter, Sr., and was a lifelong resident of Worcester. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II serving in Europe. He was a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross, the great Class of 1949. He was a strong supporter of Holy Cross athletics and was a longtime volunteer.
Mr. Baxter worked in the Worcester School System for 35 years where he was a sixth grade teacher and an assistant principal at West Tatnuck Elementary School. He was an avid golfer.
The funeral for Mr. Baxter will be held on Thursday, January 27, from the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Christ The King Church, 1052 Pleasant Street, Worcester. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, 217 Richards Avenue (Rte. 56), Paxton. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, January 25, in the funeral home.
