RUTLAND – William E. Jarvi, 72, beloved husband of Jana (Southwick) Jarvi, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 9, 2021 at UMass Memorial Health Alliance-Leominster Campus. Born in Chicago, IL and raised in Rutland, he was a son of the late Veikko and Viola (Luukko) Jarvi.
Bill graduated from Wachusett Regional High School and was a member of the United States Coast Guard Auxillary for many years. Bill enjoyed a long career as Director of Facilities at Worcester State College, retiring after 30 years of dedicated service.
He was a self proclaimed MacGyver. He could fix or make anything with minimal tools and supplies, something he learned from living on a farm. His real talent was carpentry and cabinet making. Some of his works are on permanent display in the Rutland Historical Society and the First Congregational Church of Rutland. Teaching his skills and trying to pass on his knowledge was also his passion. Many people in town would call him for when they didn’t know who else to call. If he didn’t know how he would teach himself and then get the job done. His talents will always be remembered.
Bill will be lovingly missed and remembered by his wife of 50 years, Jana; his two sons, Nathan Jarvi, and his wife, Corinne and Kevin Jarvi and his wife, Ann all of Rutland; a brother, Donald Jarvi and his wife, Sheryl of FL; his four sisters, Elaine Jefferson, Martha Doherty and her husband, Frank, Catherine Reichlen and her husband Bruce all of NH and Susan Jarvi and her husband, Carter Atkinson of HI; his four grandchildren, Duncan, Jordan, Drew and Chase; and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Bill’s life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Rutland Lions Club, P.O. Box 626, Rutland, MA 01543. Arrangements are under the care of Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden.
