William H. Preston

HOPKINTON - William H. Preston, Sr., 86, died Wednesday, November 1, 2006 in St. Patrick’s Manor, Framingham. He is survived by his sons, William H. Preston, Jr. of Holden and Craig R. Preston of Marlboro; and grandsons, Sean W. Preston of Dorchester and Eric E. Preston of Baldwinville. William’s wife of 61 years, Marcia W. (Emery) Preston, died in 2005.

William was born in Brooklyn, New York, on July 24, 1920, son of Mary Yetman and Russell Preston, both of New York. He was a graduate of Stuyvesant High School in New York City (1938) and Polytechnic University (1942) in Brooklyn, NY, where he majored in mechanical engineering and was a member of Tau Beta Pi Honor Society. He was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II. While in the military he attended Princeton University and the Wharton Graduate School at the University of Pennsylvania.

During a business career that spanned four decades, William worked as Vice President for Joy Manufacturing Company, Executive Vice President for Chase Brass & Copper, and President of Davis-Standard Division of Crompton and Knowles Corporation, from which he retired in 1983. A longtime resident of Hopkinton, William’s many interests included woodworking, collecting and restoring antiques, and Americana. He was a steadfast husband and father, and a loyal friend.

A memorial service for William will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 10, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in William’s name to the American Heart Association, Northeast Affiliate, P.O. Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220-3049.
