Biography
WORCESTER - William E. Bernstein, age 85, died on Friday, January 8, 2016.
He leaves his wife of 58 years, Marjorie (Burwick) Bernstein; three sons, Robert Bernstein and his wife, Kristen of Richmond Hill, Georgia, Richard Bernstein of Worcester, David Bernstein and his wife Robin of Harwich; a daughter, Laurie, wife of Dr. Carey Kimmelstinl of Framingham; a sister, Florence Mandel of Boca Raton, FL; and five grandchildren, Rachel, Dana, Matthew, Carly and Charlie. He was predeceased by his sister, Winifred Snider. He graduated from Clark University and Boston University School of Law. He was a partner in the law firm of Bernstein and Stern Law Office, originally Burwick & Burwick. He practiced law for over 60 years. He was a past President from 1982-84 of the Massachusetts Bar Association, past Chairman of the Board of Bar Overseers, past President of Mount Pleasant County Club, former member of the Judiciary Nominating Commission, a member of the Federal Judicial Nominating Committee of Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Trial Lawyers Association, past Chairman of the Committee of Public Counsel Services, and past member of Commission on Appointment of Federal Judges, Magistrates, U.S. Attorneys and Marshalls. He was a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, member of the Massachusetts Trial Lawyers Association. He was also past member of the Board at Anna Maria College in Paxton where he received an honorary Doctorate of Law degree. He was consistently listed among the top lawyers in Massachusetts and in New England. He was a Fellow of the American Trial Lawyers. He was also a member of the Connecticut Bar Association and the Small Business Administration National Advisory Council. He was a recipient of numerous other awards an recognitions throughout the years.He was a past Vice President and member of the Board of Trustees of Temple Emanuel. He was a former member of the Board of the Jewish Community Center and was instrumental in moving its building from Elm Street to its current location on Salisbury Street. He was a member of the Jewish Healthcare Center. FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE PRIVATE AND HELD AT THE CONVENIENCE OF THE FAMILY UNDER THE DIRECTION OF RICHARD PERLMAN OF MILES FUNERAL HOME OF HOLDEN. BURIAL WILL BE IN B’NAI BRITH CEMETERY. Memorial Observance visitation will be held from 3 P.M. to 7 P.M. on Tuesday, January 12, and 3 P.M. to 7 P.M. on Wednesday, January 13, at his residence, 389 Salisbury, Worcester.
