PRINCETON, MA – Wesley “Papa” Gates, 69 of 36 Esty Road, died Wednesday, July 21, 2004 at home following a short illness.
He leaves his wife of 46 years, Barbara L. (Nelson) Gates; a son Robert W. Gates of Princeton; a daughter, Karen L. and her husband Bill H. Lane of Princeton; a sister, Marilyn St. George of Sturbridge; 5 grandchildren, Kristen, Matthew, Jennifer Lane and Hannah and Graham Gates.
He was born in Worcester, son of Wendell and Alice (Harrington) Gates and lived all of his life in Princeton. He served in the Honor Guard division of the Army. He was an elevator mechanic with Bay State Elevator for 37 years before retiring in 1993. He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Princeton and a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed horses, woodworking, gardening and sports. He was an avid Red Sox fan and coached little league. Wes built and restored a covered wagon and traveled in a wagon train from Sutton, Massachusetts to Livermore Falls, Maine.
The funeral service for Mr. Gates will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 23, 2004 in the First Congregational Church of Princeton. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 22, 2004 in the Miles–Sterling Funeral Home, 100 Worcester Road, Sterling.
