HOLDEN – Wendy J. (Hyson) Gates, 59, of Shrewsbury Street, Holden, passed away peacefully at home in the loving care of her family and friends on Friday, September 28, 2012, after an illness. Born in Worcester, Wendy was the daughter of Warren C. and Doris H. (O’Leary) Hyson and lived most of her life in Holden.

She is survived by and will be lovingly missed by her husband of 38 years, Richard F. Gates; her son, Ryan C. Gates of Holden, her daughter, Dyana R. Nickl and her husband Michael of Sturbridge, and her son, Adam R. Gates and his wife Jenna of Peabody; two grandchildren, Kendall A. and Maxwell T. Nickl; her father, Warren C. Hyson of Holden; two brothers, Dennis Hyson and his wife Barbara of Holden and Gerald Hyson and his wife Karen of Paxton, and her sister-in-law Colleen Bovick of West Boylston and many nieces and nephews. Besides her mother, Doris, she is predeceased by her brother, Warren C. Hyson, Jr.

Wendy graduated from Wachusett Regional High School in 1971 and from the University of Massachusetts School of Nursing in 1975. She later graduated Valedictorian from the first graduating class of UMass Medical School’s Graduate School of Nursing and received an MBA from Clark University, both in Worcester. She was the Director of Government Services for Fallon Community Health Plan in Worcester. Previously, she worked in the OBGYN Department at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Director of Obstetric Services at Fallon, and was the Chief Nursing Officer at UMass Medical School/Commonwealth Medicine.

Wendy was a dedicated professional and passionately embraced her nursing career. She was a veracious reader, had an eclectic taste in music, loved attending concerts and was an avid Red Sox fan. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and dear friend. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her family especially the 30 trips made to Disney and vacations spent in Wells, Maine, New Hampshire and the Carribean. She never missed an opportunity to plan a weekend barbecue or any family function that would bring the ones she loved together; she was the true Matriarch of her family.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, October 3, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden.
