David W. Eaton

HOLDEN – David W. Eaton, 85, of 502 Bailey Road, died Thursday, September 14, 2006, in The Hermitage Nursing Home, Worcester, due to complications of Alzheimer’s Disease.

He leaves his wife of 60 years, Mary (Henrickson) Eaton; daughter, The Rev. Barbara Eaton Molfese of Lafayette, CO; son, Roger D. Eaton, Ph.D., of Haarlem, The Netherlands; three grandchildren, Leah, Arthur and Christopher; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Anna and H. Roger Erickson of Holden; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his grandson, Sam.

Mr. Eaton earned his B.A. and M.A. in History and a C.A.G.S. from Boston University. During WWII, he served as a Navy Lt., Amphibian Boat Captain, in the South Pacific – Iwo Jima, the Mariannas, Guam. His long career in education included teaching at Holden High, Wachusett Regional HS, Assistant Principal at Holden Jr. High and he was the first principal at Dawson Elementary. Mr. Eaton’s great interest in conservation and the environment included teaching at the Wendell Phillips Parker Nature School in Paxton, a branch of the Worcester Natural History Society.

Later, Mr. Eaton was a high school principal, Superintendent of Schools, Boston University’s Administrative Education Placement Officer and Dean of Students at Central New England College, where he also developed and taught a course in the “History of Technology.” He was President of the Chestnut Renewal Corp., Chairman of the South Main Corridor Neighborhood Improvement Association, Vice Chairman of the Piedmont Neighborhood Opportunity Center and the Worcester Community Action Council. He held memberships in may professional organizations.

A long-time resident of Holden, Mr. Eaton was elected to two 3-year terms on the Holden Board of Selectmen, and served four years on the Zoning Board of Appeals. He was a Past Master of the Rufus Putnam Lodge in Rutland from 1997-1998 where he was a member for over 50 years. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and was a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies of Worcester including the Worcester Lodge of Perfection, Goddard Council, Prince of Jerusalem and Lawrence Chapter of Rose Croix. He was a member of Aleppo Temple Shrine in Wilmington, a Past President of the Worcester County Shrine Club, and served on the board of the Greater Worcester 32 Degree Masonic Learning Center for Children. Mr. Eaton very much enjoyed membership in the Chaffin Congregational Church.

The funeral service for Mr. Eaton will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 19, in the Chaffin Congregational Church, Holden. Burial will be private in Grove Cemetery, Holden. Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, September 18, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden, with a Masonic Service at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Eaton’s name may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, 51 Blossom Street, Boston, MA 02114-2699; or the Chaffin Congregational Church Memorial Fund, 155 Shrewsbury Street, Holden, MA 01520; or the Alzheimer’s Association, Massachusetts Chapter, 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
