STERLING – Earle W. Clemence, Jr., 85, of Clemence Avenue, died on Saturday, May 23, 2009 in Health Alliance Hospital, Leominster after a brief illness.
His wife, Mildred M. (Shaw) Clemence died in 1992. He leaves a daughter, Kathleen A. Ruziak and her husband Vincent of Leominster; a brother, Norman Clemence of Sterling; a sister, Gertrude Clemence of Sarasota, Florida; a grandson, Vincent Ruziak, Jr. of Sterling; two great-grandsons, Anthony and Cameron Ruziak; several nephews and nieces. Two brothers, Charles and Robert, and three sisters, Louise, Dorothy and Phyllis, all predeceased him. He was born in Sterling, the son of Earle W. and Emma (Gustafson) Clemence and lived here all of his life.
After leaving school at an early age, Earle went to work at his family's wood mill, Clemence and Sons in Sterling, and later worked many years as a carpenter for both Greenwood Homes in Holden and Boardman Builders in Princeton. After his retirement, he restored antique furniture and did general wood working in his home. He was a member of Oakdale United Methodist Church in West Boylston and the Sterling Senior Citizens.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26th, in the Miles-Sterling Funeral Home, 100 Worcester Road (Rte. 12), Sterling. The funeral for Earle will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 27th, in the Oakdale United Methodist Church, 15 North Main Street, West Boylston. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery, Clinton Road (Rte. 62), Sterling. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Payton Steeple Bell Fund, Oakdale United Methodist Church, 15 North Main Street, West Boylston; or to the Town of Sterling Fire Department, Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 515, Sterling, MA 01564.
