Robert Warren Bergstrom

July 6, 1921 — December 26, 2010

HOLDEN – Robert Warren Bergstrom, 89, of Flagler Drive, died peacefully on Sunday, December 26, 2010 in the Holden Rehabilitation & Skilled Nursing Center. His wife of 46 years, Reta L. (Mellen) Bergstrom, died in 1997. Born in Worcester, he was a son of J. Hugo and Olga (Silven) Bergstrom. Bob has lived in Holden since 1951.

He is survived by a son, Peter and his fiancée Linda Castellani of Holden; two daughters, Joanne Savignac of Paxton and Joyce Carlson and her husband Dean of Leominster; five grandchildren, Marie Savignac and her fiancé Tim Grassey of Quincy, Gregory Savignac of Hardy, VA, Britt Savignac of Rutland, Amanda Bergstrom and her fiancé Nick Wilder of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, and Emily Bergstrom of Holden; nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. Besides his wife, Bob was predeceased by his brother, Paul and two sisters, Alice Ellis and Doris Dixon, and a grandson, Raymond Joseph Savignac II.

Bob was a graduate of Holden High School, class of 1939, and the Worcester Junior College. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving in the HQ Company 30th Infantry Division in the European African Middle Eastern Theatre. He earned the Combat Infantry Badge, three bronze battle stars and the Purple Heart for wounds received in action.

He worked for Norton Company in Worcester for 41 years, retiring in 1982 as an inspector in the abrasives division. While at Norton's, in 1980 he was the named "Inspector of the Year" by the Worcester section of the American Society for Quality Control. He was a member of Chaffin Congregational Church where he taught Sunday School and served on various committees and boards. He was also a member of the Greendale Retired Men's Club, the Boylston Lodge of Masons in West Boylston, the Norton 25-year Club and was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. Following his retirement, he enjoyed traveling, woodcarving, visiting with friends and took pride in the accomplishments of his grandchildren. He enjoyed following sporting events and was a life-long Red Sox fan.

Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, December 30th, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. A Masonic Service will be held at 6 p.m. during calling hours. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 31st, in Chaffin Congregational Church, Holden. Spring burial will be in Grove Cemetery, Holden. Memorial donations may be made to the Chaffin Congregational Church Memorial Fund, 155 Shrewsbury Street, Holden, MA 01520; or to the Holden Council on Aging (for their Meals-on-Wheels Program), 1130 Main Street, Holden, MA 01520.
