Biography
WORCESTER – Walter E. Hildick, 105, of 5 Suburban Road, died Sunday, February 26, 2012, at UMass Memorial Health Care, University Campus, Worcester. He was born in Newark, New Jersey, the son of Francis J. and Elizabeth (Bexon) Hildick and lived in Sterling during his school years, attending Leominster High School from which he graduated in 1924.
Mr. Hildick graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge in 1928 with a degree in chemical engineering and business administration. Later he was a teaching assistant at MIT under the direction of Professor Schell, founder of the Sloan School of Business. He was a long time textile-manufacturing executive and, at one time was a Vice President of the Textron Corporation, operating the Atlantic Rayon Division in Rhode Island where he manufactured parachute lines. Later he returned to Central Massachusetts as president of Curtis & Marble Machine Company in Worcester retiring in 1975. He also served as president of Central New England College from 1977 to 1979. He was a member of the Worcester Club, the Kiwanis Club of Worcester, and became MIT’s oldest living alumni. He lived in Worcester for 53 years.
His wife of 63 years, Anne E. (Folan) Hildick died in 1995. He leaves his daughter, Dr. Patricia H. Bazemore (Maxson) who is Associate Professor of Family Medicine and Psychiatry at UMass Medical School; his son, William T. Hildick of Lake Oswego, Oregon; five grandchildren, Jonathan Patrick Bazemore, Katherine Anne Harrison MD, Mary Elizabeth Bazemore JD, Suzanne Claire Hildick and Anne Patricia Blickenstaff. His brother, Francis G. Hildick and sisters, Eleanor M. and Dorothy predeceased him. He is also survived by five great grandchildren.
By his life Walter Hildick passed on many things to his children and grandchildren: his love of cars, his enthusiasm for technology, his gentle warmth, and his social values. To his children and his grandchildren he would say each day “what have you done for the good of the order?” With the assistance of his son-in-law Professor Stephen Maxson he initiated the Walter Hildick Prize for Innovation in Neuroscience at the University of Connecticut.
Relatives and friends are invited to meet with Mr. Hildick’s family from 11 a.m. until the time of his service at 12 noon on Thursday, March 1, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. The Rev. Nancy W. Strickland will be officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Sterling. Flowers may be sent or donations made to Heifer International, P.O.
