STERLING - Walter F. Crosby, M.D., of Maple Street, died peacefully at age 94 on Friday, February 1, 2008, at Sunrise Assisted Living of Leominster. Dr. Crosby was born and raised in Danvers, the son of Percy L. and Edith F. (Guppy) Crosby. He was predeceased by his brother Richard Crosby.

His wife of 56 years, Mildred (Brick) Crosby, died in 1997. Walter and Mildred had four children, Judith, Walter Jr., Stephen and Janet. Judith Anne is married to Nelson Mather and they have three daughters, Beth Anne, Suzanne and Dianne. Beth Anne Mather-Noonan is mother of two children, Angela and Michael. Suzanne is married to Robert Hart and they have four daughters, Jocelyn, Stephanie, Kathryn and Ashley. Walter Franklin Jr. is married to Ethel Kovacs and they have three children, Meredith, Melissa and Jonathan. Stephen Richard was married to Sandra Myrick (deceased) and their two children are Benjamin and Rebecca. Janet Louise is married to Michel Laganiere and they have four sons, Etienne, Simon, Olivier and Antoine.

Dr. Crosby graduated from Danvers High School and then from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, ME. He earned his Medical Degree at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston. After interning at Hahnemann Hospital in Worcester, he started his practice in 1941 and was a long-time family physician in Sterling. Dr. Crosby instructed at the former Clinton Hospital School of Nursing and later was responsible for that hospital's Emergency Room Services. He was also a corporate physician at DuPont Co. in Leominster and Wilmington, DE, retiring after 20 years. He was a member for more than 50 years and former president of the Worcester District Medical Society. He belonged to the First Church in Sterling since 1941.

During his lifetime he was involved with several organizations including: The Boy Scouts of America, Rotary Club and The Chocksett Club. He was one of the original members of the Sterling Cadet Band and played the tuba. He loved baseball (Red Sox) and hockey, and was an avid gardener and bird watcher. He re-energized by hunting and fishing in what he called his "second state", Maine. Dr. Crosby camped with his family across the U.S. in 1957 and during many summers at Cape Cod.

A memorial service for Dr. Crosby will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 26th, in the First Church in Sterling, 6 Meeting House Hill Road, Sterling. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Sterling. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Town of Sterling Fire Dept., Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 515, Sterling, MA 01564; the First Church of Sterling Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 40, Sterling, MA 01564; or a charitable organization of your choice. Miles-Sterling Funeral Home, 100 Worcester Road, Sterling, is directing arrangements.
