Walter I. Costa

June 11, 1938 — January 28, 2021

STERLING – Walter I. Costa, 82, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Thursday, January 28, 2021, at UMass Memorial Hospital. Born and raised in Worcester, Walter was the son of Joseph and Norina (Bussolari) Costa and lived the last 53 years in Sterling. His beloved wife of 51 years, Elaine J. (Ferrandino) Costa died in 2010.

Walter was a graduate of the former Worcester Boy’s Trade School with a concentration in auto body repair. He worked for several years at various auto body garages including Ronnie’s Auto Body. Walter was a retired auto body repair teacher from Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical High School in Fitchburg.

He was a member of St. Richard of Chichester Church and the Greendale Retired Men’s Club in Worcester. Walter loved buying and restoring old cars. He enjoyed owning Corvettes and attending car shows. He was a member of Corvettes United of Central Massachusetts for many years where he and Elaine met many lifelong friends. He also enjoyed playing cards, spending time with his friends including his Friday morning breakfasts with his buddies. Walter volunteered at local food banks and the Sterling Senior Center. He also enjoyed reading and was a regular fixture at the Conant Free Library in Sterling.

He looked forward to vacationing with his family at Wells Beach in Maine and Aruba. He will be lovingly remembered and missed by his family and friends.

Walter is survived by his three daughters, Patricia A. Stankevitz and her husband, William of Northbridge, Pamela J. Costa of West Boylston and Robin L. Ferguson of Leominster; two granddaughters, Melanie Dietel and her husband, John of Sutton and Ashley Rainho and her husband, Joshua of Norton; a great-granddaughter, Clara Dietel; two nieces; and his longtime companion, Vina Valerio of Lancaster. Besides his wife, Walter is predeceased by a sister, Emilia Ruzicka.

Out of love and concern for the safety of Walter’s family and friends, a Mass of Christian Burial will be held privately at St. Richard of Chichester Church in Sterling. He will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife at Hillside Cemetery also in Sterling. A gathering celebrating Walter’s life will be held at a time and place to be announced. Funeral arrangements are under the care of the Miles Sterling Funeral Home and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Rd, Sterling.
