PAXTON – W. Duane Kidwell, 94, passed away October 30, 2016 at the Knollwood Nursing Center. He was born August 16, 1922 on a farm in Kinsman, Ohio to Inez (Arnold) and Omar Kidwell, the sixth of 13 children. Duane received his undergraduate degrees from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio, and his Masters Degree from The Ohio State University.
He served in the Navy during World War II as a naval engineering officer, and taught mathematics for two years at The Ohio State University. In 1948, he began his career as an actuary for The Paul Revere Insurance Companies. Duane retired from Paul Revere in 1987 as Vice President, Chief Actuary, and a member of various Boards of Directors. He then taught Actuarial Science at the University of Hartford, and consulted in the actuarial aspects of insurance products and management. Failing eyesight forced him to formally retire in 1994, though he remained active with the Society of Actuaries well into the 2000s.
He was a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries, and a member of The American Academy of Actuaries and the International Association of Actuaries.
In the 1950s, he was a pioneer in the development of youth baseball and amateur hockey in Auburn, where the Kidwell family lived from 1948 to 1965 before moving to Paxton. Duane was an avid reader of western novels, a gardener, enjoyed his daily morning walks, and kept Ohio buckeyes in his office and home as a reminder of his roots.
Duane was predeceased by his wife Eleanor (2008), son Randy (2007), and 9 of his siblings. He is survived by his son Jim Kidwell (Cindy Mills) of Austin, Texas, his daughter Sue Wyand (Charlie Wyand) of East Lyme, Connecticut, a special former daughter-in-law Judy Erickson (Bob Erickson) of Worcester, 4 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Knollwood Nursing Center, the team at JHC Hospice, and Dr. Edward Driscoll for their kind and caring professionalism during Dad’s final decline.
