W. Douglas Day

STERLING – W. Douglas Day, 78, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, May 30, 2017, after a recent and courageous battle with cancer. Born and raised in Sterling, Doug was a son of Stanley W. Day. He attended Sterling schools and graduated from Leominster Trade High School. In the early 1960’s, Doug honorably served his country in the United States Army, and upon his return, he met and married the love of his life, Brenda M. Locke and together they raised their family in Sterling. Doug began his career with Norton Company as a kiln operator, retiring after 37 years of service. Doug will long be remembered for his dedication and tireless devotion to his community as a firefighter for the Town of Sterling for 47 years, retiring as Captain in 2003. He was a member of the Wachusett Muster League and enjoyed participating and judging for many years, and was a a former member of the Sterling EMS. Doug worked as an electrician for several area construction companies several years ago and was also a life member of the Worcester West Forest Wardens Association. After his retirement, he could always be found socializing with friends at the nearest coffee shop. He will be lovingly missed by his two sons, David Day and his wife, Therese and Deane Day and his wife, Lisa all of Sterling; his grandchildren, Katelyn, Joelle and Devin Day, Samantha Ingui, Michael, Christopher, Alex and Stephanie Garceau; and his two great-grandchildren, Aubree and Austin Ingui. In addition to his father, Doug was predeceased by his beloved wife of 51 years, Brenda M. (Locke) Day and two brothers. Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday, June 5th at the Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road (Rte. 12), Sterling. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 6th at the First Church in Sterling, 6 Meetinghouse Hill Rd, Sterling. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Sterling. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sterling Firefighters Association, P.O. Box 1081, Sterling, MA 01564.
