Virginia S. (Van Horn) Taub
March 19, 1926 — May 12, 2020
COTUIT/SANIBEL ISLAND – Virginia S. (Van Horn) Taub, 94, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 12, 2020 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's. She was born in Bayside, Queens, New York, the daughter of the late Alfred, Jr. and Virginia (Hart) Van Horn.
She leaves her children, Russell Taub and wife Anne, Dr Rebecca Taub and husband Dr Paul Friedman, Judith Osborn, Pamela Fitzgerald, Jennifer Scuteri and husband Jeff, Stephen Taub and wife Laurie; her 10 grandchildren, Winslow, Margaret, Ben, Sarah, Greg, Zachary, Daniel, Alyssa, Thomas and Deanna; her 5 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her ex-husband, Donald Taub, with whom she maintained a 75-year friendship. She was predeceased by her brother, Alfred Van Horn III in 2018.
Virginia graduated from Bayside High School and earned her Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Oberlin College in 1946. She worked for many years in social services and was a director of camp services for the Girl Scouts of America and the director of the Christopher Columbus Community Centerin Boston’s North End, an organization supporting at-risk youths.
Virginia lived on both Sanibel Island, Florida and in Cotuit, Massachusetts. Her homes were always welcoming and became the gathering spot for family weddings, vacations and celebrations.
Virginia, known as Jinny to her friends and as Meeshka to her family was an inspiring, independent and unique woman who enjoyed many activities and supported numerous charities. She was an avid, competitive tennis and golfer well into her seventies. She was a voracious reader, gardener, and loved her golden retrievers. She was always happiest when all of her family was gathered. She was passionate about the environment and donated her time and money to many causes. Although small in size, she always remained a feisty New Yorker. Her legacy of strength, compassion and love for her family and friends has been instilled in all whom she met and will never end.
At Virginia’s request, funeral arrangements are private and will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the care of the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 309 Waverley Oaks Road, Waltham, MA 02452.
