RUTLAND - Viola M. Luukko Jarvi, passed away on March 2, 2004 after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Viola is survived by her husband of 56 years, Veikko Armas Jarvi; six children, William E. Jarvi of Rutland, Donald A. Jarvi of Hollywood, Florida, Elaine M. Jefferson of Pepperell, Martha L. Doherty of Kensington, New Hampshire, Cathy A. Reichlen of Acton, and Dr. Susan I. Jarvi of Volcano, Hawaii; three sisters, Irja Riano of Rensselaer, New York, M. Lillian Gavitt of Riverside, California, Sylvia Rotti of Rutland; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Viola attended Becker Jr. College then was employed by Norton Company of Worcester. After raising six children she went to work for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a nutrition specialist serving the Worcester area for many years.
Viola was a supporter of the Rutland Fife & Drum Corps for several years, an active member of the First Congregational Church of Rutland and the Finnish Heritage Society of Rutland. She was a member of the Worcester Art Museum and a skilled amateur painter.
Mrs. Jarvi ‘s funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 8, 2004, in the First Congregational Church, 264 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Rutland. Calling hours are from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 7, 2004, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Burial will be in Rural Cemetery, 142 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Rutland, in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Congregational Church, Memorial Fund, 264 Main Street, Rutland, MA 01543.
