HOLDEN – John V. Hanks, Sr., 82, of River Street, died surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 in UMass Memorial Healthcare, Worcester.
He leaves his former wife with whom he lived, Charlotte A. Grant; two sons, John Hanks, Jr. of Palm Beach, Florida and Michael Hanks of Barre; a daughter, Marie (Hanks) Lapoint of North Carolina; two step-sons, Paul and John Grady both of Holden; five step-daughters, Colleen Grady of Arizona, Mondine McLear of Paxton, Dawn Ordung of Holden, Bridget Feroci of Sterling and Anne Feltquate of New Jersey; a sister, Sister Agnes Hanks from the Order of St. Ann of Marlborough; many grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Robert and Richards Hanks and four sisters predeceased him. He was born and raised in Fitchburg, a son of Richard F. and Ida M. (Bourgault) Hanks, and lived in Fitchburg for 50 years.
John was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a well known master carpenter for many years in central Massachusetts. In his early years, he was a member of the Fitchburg Turners and was AAU Champion in gymnastics. He was also a body builder in Fitchburg, roller skater and dance champion and loved the beach.
A memorial service for John will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 7th, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Burial will be private in St. John's Cemetery, Worcester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Why Me? Inc. & Sherry's House, 1152 Pleasant Street, Worcester, MA 01602.
