Vera V. (Poyhonen) Rivers

December 7, 1925 — April 1, 2012

– Vera V. (Poyhonen) Rivers, 86, of Crestwood Road, died on April, 1, 2012, after an illness. Her husband of 63 years, Henry C. Rivers, died in 2009.

She is survived by her 2 nephews, David L. Anderson and his wife Gloria of Manchester, ME and Mark A. Poyhonen and his wife Tresa of Sterling, VA; and 5 great-grandnieces, special friends, who she considered family, Bob and Jan Dryden and Brian and Ceil Murphy. She is predeceased by two brothers, Walter T. Poyhonen and Martin E. Poyhonen and two sisters, Sylvia B. Anderson and Vieno L. Holm, and by her nephews, Eric M. and Kris E. Poyhonen and her niece, Lenore E. Marean.

Vera was born in Gardner on December 7, 1925 to Evert and Selma (Kohvakka) Poyhonen, the youngest of five children. She was so proud of her loving immigrant parents and in wonder of the sacrifices they made to leave their families in Finland to meet, marry and raise their family to be Americans. Vera had lived in Hubbardston, Worcester, and in Paxton for 52 years.

Vera knew her persona better than anyone, was a fun person who enjoyed a good party with good friends. She was a take charge person when necessary, opinionated and intolerant of pretense. Vera had a sensitive emotional side to the beauty of nature, a colorful sunset and the plight of wildlife, pets, our flag, parades, military bands, a choir, and the memory of a happy time in the past. Vera’s top priority always was her beloved husband. They had shared a childhood bond from ages nine and seven which became more meaningful through their lean years and separations during World War II. Together they accepted all that life brings with it.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2012 in Rural Glen Cemetery, Worcester Road (Rte. 68), Hubbardston. There will be no visitation. It was Vera’s sincere wish that in lieu of flowers, memorials, and messages, that friends along life’s way take a moment to recall a happy time when their paths met. Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden is assisting the family with arrangements. www.milesfuneralhome.com
