Vasiliki 'Bessie' (Makris) Efstathiou

WORCESTER - Vasiliki “Bessie” (Makris) Efstathiou, 82, of Worcester, passed away peacefully in her home with loved ones by her side on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Glina, Vorios Epirus, Greece, daughter of the late Athanasios and Evdokia Makris and lived in Worcester for more than 60 years. Her husband, Dimitrios “Jimmy” Efstathiou of 46 years predeceased her in January, 2000. Bessie was a devoted and faithful member of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral. She loved volunteering at the Cathedral, and at the Grecian Festivals. Bessie was a member of the Philoptochos Society, the Pan-Epirotic Society, the Cathedral’s Seniors, and the Office Angels. The dedication and commitment to her Greek Orthodox faith was exemplified in everything she did. Bessie was admired and respected by all that knew her for her kindness, sincerity, and devotion. She was a loving yiayia and enjoyed spending precious time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, whom she loved dearly. She was an integral part of their lives, and will be truly missed by all. Bessie and her husband owned and operated the Sunshine Restaurant and Dairy Bar in Northborough for more than 20 years, prior to retiring in 2000. Bessie leaves a son, Christos D. Efstathiou of Worcester; two daughters, Alexandra Kappos and her husband, Alexander, and Christina Tonevski and her husband, Leo both of Holden; five grandchildren, James, Elizabeth, Jovan, Leonidas, and Anna; three great granddaughters, Kaia, Zoe and Sophia; and many nephews and nieces in the U.S and Greece. A daughter, Thesprotia Efstathiou predeceased her in 1956. We would like to thank the JHC Home Care Hospice staff for the personalized care and support they provided Bessie over the last several months. Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours Sunday, February 19th from 4:00 to 6:30PM at Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 20, 2017 at 10:00 AM in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street, Worcester with the Rev. Dr. Dimitrios Moriatis officiating. Burial will follow at Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please remember Bessie with a contribution to St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street, Worcester 01609.
