HOLDEN - As the sun rose early Sunday morning August 2, 2009 Lywena Temple Richards passed away surrounded by her loving family

The daughter of John Oliver and Anne Temple Johnstone, Lywena was born on December 14, 1921 in the infirmary at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine where her father was a professor and track coach. She attended schools in Worcester graduating from North High School, Bancroft School and Becker Jr. College and was in the Nurses Cadet Corps during World War II.

On June 26, 1954 she married Sherman Lawson Richards and she lived in Holden for over 50 years. She also leaves behind three daughters, Dory-Ann Richards Waxman and husband Daniel of Portland, Maine, Jane Carolyn Packard and husband Christopher of Georgetown, Maine and Gwen Ellen Montville and partner David Robinson of Holden. Her wonderful grandchildren, Benjamin, Adam, and Josh Waxman, Meredith and Byron James, Justin and Jason Montville and special friends Diana Parisi, Renee Laprade, and Cindy Taylor; and her adoring dog Duchie. She is predeceased by her brother, Jack Johnstone.

She raised her family on Manning Street in Holden which was home to not only a host of neighborhood children but a menagerie of assorted animals. Over the years Lywena put her energy into her children and most importantly her seven wonderful grandchildren who endearing called her Gigar. Community was very important to Lywena and she participated by being a Girl Scout leader, 4-H leader and sang in the choir in church. She was a member of the Holden Grange, The Oakdale United Methodist Church and was a faithful supporter of the Worcester Animal Rescue League, The Massachusetts SPCA and the National Wildlife Federation and The Native American Sioux Nation.

Lywena loved the ocean and some of her cherished moments were spent walking with her husband Sherman on vacation at York Beach and sitting for hours at their favorite spot at Nubble Light. She had a great love of music, from singing, harmonizing and playing the piano. She loved playing at Trout Brook with her grandchildren, fishing on the Quinapoxet, gardening and whistling to her canaries and the birds at the feeders by the kitchen window. She loved her Mothers home state of Vermont, the great state of Maine, her Welsh-Scottish heritage but was always the happiest surrounded by her family and friends at Willow Knoll her home on Manning St.

A celebration of Lywenas life will be held Sunday August 9th, at 2 p.m. at The Oakdale United Methodist Church, 15 North Main St. West Boylston. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Worcester Animal Rescue League, 139 Holden Street, Worcester, MA 01606.
