Anthony 'Tony' C. Pappas

HOLDEN – Anthony “Tony” C. Pappas, 75, of Sawyer Lane, died Thursday, December 17, 2009 in UMass Memorial Healthcare - University Campus, Worcester, after a courageous battle with leukemia.

He leaves his wife of 33 years, Ruth M. (Johnson) Pappas; his son, Mark Pappas of Thessalonica, Greece; Ruth’s children, Thaddeus W. Jarowski of South Deerfield, Kathryn J. Callahan of West Boylston and Mary M. Nordheim of Amesbury; a brother, George Pappas of Auburn; seven grandchildren, William, Jason, Theresa, Socrates, Anastasis, Anthony and Christos; a great-granddaughter, Julia; several nephews and nieces; and his two precious cats, Koukla and Baby. A son, Christos Pappas of Greece, died in 2004. Two sisters, Dora Gicas and Helen Matulaitis, predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, a son of Christos and Anastasia (Filliou) Pappas, and lived in Worcester before moving to Holden 33 years ago. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War.

Tony was a graduate of Worcester Boys Trade High School. He worked for Wyman Gordon Company in Worcester for fourteen years. Previously, he worked at Astra Pharmaceutical Co., Smith Valve Co. and Steve’s Pizza in West Boylston. While living in Greece, Tony worked for the Greek Embassy.

He was a member of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Worcester and was very proud of his Greek heritage. He was a devoted religious participant at St. Mary’s Church in Jefferson where he was an usher and collector at the 11:30 a.m. Sunday Mass. He was a member of the Greendale Men’s Club and the Rufus Putnam Lodge of Masons in Rutland.

Tony was compassionate and caring, and loved spending time with his family and many friends. The family would like to thank the nurses, aides and staff at the UMass Memorial Healthcare-University Campus, 7th floor Oncology Department, especially Dr. William V. Walsh and Dr. Eva Medvedova.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 21st, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. service in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street, Worcester. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, 217 Richards Avenue (Rte. 56), Paxton. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral Building Fund, 102 Russell Street, Worcester, MA 01609; or the St. Mary’s Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 2200, Jefferson, MA 01522.
