PAXTON/HOLDEN – Toivo M. Lyra, 92, of 723 Pleasant Street, Paxton, died Friday, November 11, 2005, in St. Vincent Hospital, Worcester, after an illness.
He leaves his wife of 65 years, Auli T. (Maki) Lyra; his daughter, Sharon M. O’Day and her husband Jay of Paxton; a sister, Mae Strand of Worcester; five grandchildren, Jason P. Fanning of North Brookfield, Jay O’Day IV of Leicester, Michael F. Fanning, Patrick L. O’Day and Bethany L. (Fanning) Delaurie all of Paxton; two great-grandchildren, Johnny O’Day and Justine O’Day both of Leicester. A daughter, Janice M. Fanning, died in 1999. Six brothers and sisters predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of Matti and Maria (Katajamaki) Lyra, and lived in Holden for 50 years before moving to Paxton five years ago.
Mr. Lyra was an Army veteran of World War II serving in the European theater. He worked for Palley Office Supply for 50 years and Palson’s for 10 years, both in Worcester. He was a member of Chaffin Congregational Church, First President and member of the Finnish American Club of Rutland, former President of the Chaffin Men’s Club and was an avid Red Sox fan.
The funeral service for Mr. Lyra will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday, November 15, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, 217 Richards Avenue (Rte. 56), Paxton. A calling hour will be held from 11 a.m. to 12 noon in the funeral home prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chaffin Congregational Church, 155 Shrewsbury Street, Holden; or to the Scholarship Fund, Finnish Heritage Society Sovittaja, 5 Ridgewood Road, Paxton, MA 01612.
