HOLDEN – Raymond T. Mahon, 79, of 46 Surrey Lane, died Friday, May 23, 2008 in Holden Nursing Home from complications due to diabetes.
He leaves his wife of 51 years, Patricia A. (O'Connor) Mahon; a son, R. Thomas Mahon of Holden; two daughters, Dr. Paula M. Mahon d'Entremont and her husband Robert of Derry, NH and Patricia A. Hurley and her husband James of Holden; two sisters, Patricia Bolster of Narragansett, RI and Pauline DeRoin of Warwick, RI; six grandchildren, J. Joseph, Eileen, Maura, Elizabeth and Sheila Hurley and Raymond d'Entremont; and several nieces and nephews. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island, son of Raymond T. and Laura (Flynn) Mahon, was raised in Cranston and Point Judith, RI and lived in Holden since 1962.
Mr. Mahon was a graduate of Cranston High School, College of the Holy Cross and Boston University School of Law. He served in the U.S. Navy and reserves as a LTJG during the Korean conflict. Upon his return from service in 1955, he received a Masters in Tax Law (LLM) from Boston University School of Law, where he later taught for the next 25 years. He started his career as a Tax Attorney for the IRS in Boston and in 1962 he joined the Worcester law firm of Bowditch & Dewey where he worked for 44 years, retiring as a Senior Partner in 2006. In 1995, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the St. Thomas More Society and in 2000, he was presented the Pro-Bono Publico Award by the Massachusetts Bar Association for his efforts in providing legal services to the poor. He served on the Legal Assistance Corporation of Central Mass. and he co-chaired the WCBA Committee on services to the poor and homeless for over six years, overseeing the Honorable Harry T. Zarrow Homeless Advocacy Project. He was former Director of the Christian Doctrine Program, Eucharistic Minister and a daily communicant at St. Mary's Church.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27th, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. The funeral for Mr. Mahon will be held on Wednesday, May 28th, from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, 114 Princeton Street, Jefferson. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, 1326 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden.
