STERLING – Richard T. Higgins, Sr., 76, of 7 Princeton Road, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Thursday, February 1, 2007, after a long illness.

He leaves his wife of 55 years, Maureen A. (Fenno) Higgins; two sons, Paul V. Higgins of Sterling and Richard T. Higgins, Jr. and his close friend, Francine Hedlund and her daughter, Hannah all of Boylston; a daughter, Patricia Blanchflower and her husband, John of Sterling; three grandchildren, Maura D. Blanchflower, Jack M. Blanchflower and his friend Lindy Sontag and Thomas Higgins IV all of Sterling. Three children, Thomas J. Higgins III, Sean M. and Maura E. Higgins, his daughter-in-law, Tina Sullivan Higgins, and a sister, Marianne Warner, predeceased him. He was born in Worcester the son of Thomas J. and Kathleen F. (Murphy) Higgins and lived in Shrewsbury, Worcester and 40 years in Sterling.

Mr. Higgins graduated from Classical High School in Worcester and owned and operated R.T. Higgins and Son’s Contractors in Sterling for 30 years, retiring in 1996. He also designed, built and owned Landlord Ben’s Colonial Tavern in Sterling, which he and his family operated from 1979 to 1992. He was an active member of St. Richard of Chichester Church, Hiram O. Taylor American Legion Post 189 and a charter member of the Sterling Lion’s Club. He was a Korean War Navy Veteran and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was community minded and was a member of the Industrial Commission, Bicentennial Committee and the Horseman Council all in Sterling.

Relatives and friends of Mr. Higgins are invited to attend calling hours from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, February 4, in the Miles-Sterling Funeral Home, 100 Worcester Road, Sterling. The funeral will be held on Monday, February 5, from the funeral home followed by a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Richard of Chichester Church, 4 Bridge Street. Burial will be private in Hillside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to VNA Care Hospice, 120 Thomas Street, Worcester 01608-1280.
