Born in Manchester, NH in 1931 the son of Norman and Jennie Viola (Jenness) Bartlett. Milton grew up in Walpole, MA. He graduated from Walpole High School, Northeastern University and Andover Newton Theological Seminary where he received his B.D. and D. Min. degrees and specialized training with AAPC and ACPE.
Rev. Bartlett was ordained as a minister in the United Church of Christ by the Worcester Central Association in 1958, and served settled pastorates in West Medford, MA; Rockdale, MA; Oakville, CT; and Boylston, MA. In 1970 he served as Main South Neighborhood Center Director for the Worcester CAC. Milton then served as an Intentional Interim Pastor for 21 different congregations within the Central Association, until his retirement in 1993 due to his ongoing struggles with IBM, a form of Muscular Dystrophy. He also served as Protestant Chaplain at the Worcester County Hospital (1962-95) and Mohegan Council B.S.A. Treasure Valley (1964-68).
In the summer Milton enjoyed being at his longtime family property on Northwood Lake, NH where he renovated a rustic fish camp into a well-loved summer cottage named “Dad’s Delight” (aka Camp Work-a-Lot) which his wife called “The Fires of Hell”. He treasured his time there early on with his parents, then later with his children and grandkids who all engaged in his many building projects (planning and construction), hiking, swimming, and sailing. He also shared a passion for boating with his family and participated in safe boating courses through the USCG Auxiliary, first as a student, then as a member of Flotilla 1006, as an instructor teaching safe boating courses (sailing). He also served as Flotilla Commander, Division Captain and Acting Chaplain for the First District. He was an associate member of Flotilla 206 in Portsmouth, NH where he did safe boating patrols in Portsmouth Harbor.
He was also active in the American Lung Association, the Drug Coalition (Holden), the West Boylston Council on Aging, and the West Boylston School Building Committees. He was a volunteer in his wife’s classrooms and a huge support to her teaching career in West Boylston Elementary Schools.
He was a member of the First Congregational Church, West Boylston, where, in addition to having once served as interim pastor, he served on many boards and committees in his retirement.
There will be a Memorial Service on Saturday, March 10 at 2:00 at the First Congregational Church, 26 Central Street, West Boylston, MA 01583. In lieu of flowers, donations honoring his memory may be made to the First Congregational Church of West Boylston, Memorial Fund.
