Biography
WORCESTER - Susan R. Shapiro died peacefully at her home in Watertown on Thursday April 30th surrounded by her family, after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. She was 62 years old. Susan had a dedicated career as a clinical social worker and geriatric care manager and held a number of clinical management and supervisory positions during her career.
Susan was born in Worcester, the daughter of the late Max and Rebecca (Cutler) Shapiro and lived the last nine years of her life in Watertown. She leaves a brother William A. Shapiro and his wife Sherry, a brother Harold Shapiro and his wife Sissy. She also leaves her nieces, Lisa Shapiro and Amy Shapiro and her nephews, Michael Shapiro and his wife, Danielle, David Shapiro and Stephen Shapiro.
Susan graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in 1974 and received her master’s degree from Smith College School for Social Work. She received a certificate in psychoanalytic psychotherapy training from the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, where she was an active member and co-chaired the admission committee for the advanced training and fellowship programs. She served on the board of the National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers and was a member of the National Association of Clinical Social Workers.
Susan was also an advocate for Compassion & Choices and spoke at the State House in their support.
Susan had many special times with her nieces and nephews; she had many great friends and was a passionate fan of the Boston Red Sox.
FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD AT 9:00 AM ON SUNDAY MAY 3RD AT MILES FUNERAL HOME, 1158 MAIN STREET, HOLDEN UNDER THE DIRECTION OF RICHARD PERLMAN. Burial will be in B'nai Brith Cemetery, Worcester.
Following the interment, memorial observance will be held through Sunday evening, May 3rd at the residence of Harold and Sissy Shapiro, 9 Lantern Lane, Worcester and 5PM to 9PM on Monday May 4th. Memorial observance will continue on Tuesday May 5th from 5PM to 9PM at Susan’s home at 159 Hillside Rd., Watertown.
