Biography

RUTLAND/OAKHAM  -  Sumner “Skip” E. Taylor, Jr., 95, of Rutland passed away peacefully on Monday, July 24, 2017 at home. Born in Worcester, Skip was the son of the late Sumner E. Taylor, Sr. and Lora M. (Davis) Taylor. While working as a clerk at Sears Roebuck in Worcester, Skip met the love of his life, Virginia R. Dostoler, with whom he enjoyed life until her passing in 2008 after 66 years together. During WWII, Skip enlisted and proudly served his country as Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1942 until 1946. Skip was a general contractor for many years after having worked as a salesman for Kesselli & Morse Company in Worcester. He was a member and deacon at the Oakham Congregational Church, was a Cub Scout leader in Paxton, was a member of Rufus Putnam Lodge of Masons in Rutland for more than 50 years, and a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association (NRA). Skip leaves two sons, Bradford S. Taylor and his wife, Lisa of Oakham, and Gary L. Taylor of Fitzwilliam, NH; three daughters, Bonnie V. Heebner of McLean, VA, Dianne T. Oakes and her husband, Douglas of Shrewsbury, and Kathryn T. Wesolowski and her husband, Francis of Jefferson; five grandsons, Jason D. Heebner of Reston, VA, Tynan Taylor of Leominster, Kyle Taylor of Hadley, Keith Sanford of Benedicta, ME, and John F. Wesolowski of Jefferson; four granddaughters, Heather K. Nicholson-Boucher of Chantilly, VA, Erin T. Curry of Swansey, NH, Angela Oakes of St. Thomas, VI, and Sarah A. Wilkinson of Worcester; three great-grandsons, Jacob, David and Justin; and four great-granddaughters, Ava, Anya Marie, Jessica and Brooke; and one great great-grandson, Jace. A sister, Arline Larson and a grandson, David P. Taylor predeceased him. Skip’s family wishes to thank Alice Sarfo and the VNA Hospice of Worcester for the compassionate care offered to Skip and his family.  Family and friends are invited to visit with Skip’s family on Friday, July 28, 2017 from 5 to 8 PM in Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. A funeral Service will be held on Saturday, July 29, 2017 at 10:00 AM in the First Congregational Church of Rutland, 264 Main Street, Rutland with the Pastor David Fish officiating. Burial with military honors will follow immediately in Rural Cemetery in Rutland.  The family requests that flowers be omitted and contributions be made in Skip’s name to the VNA Hospice of Worcester, 120 Thomas Street, Worcester 01608   or the Alzheimer Association, 128 Providence Street, Worcester, MA 01604. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Philip G.
