Stuart P. Schmohl

July 13, 1921 — November 8, 2013

SHIRLEY/STERLING – Stuart P. Schmohl, Jr., 92, formerly of Sterling and Shirley, died peacefully on Friday, November 8, 2013 under the loving care of his family and the staff at Leominster Crossings in Leominster. Born and raised in Worcester, Stuart was the son of Stuart P. and Winifred (Hinz) Schmohl and moved to Sterling in 1942 where he and his first wife, Elizabeth Patten, raised their two children until her untimely death in 1969.



In 1970, Stuart met and married his second wife, Ruth Marie Bruner O'Dell and moved to Shirley, where they lived for the next 41 years.



He proudly served his country during World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corp in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre including China, India and Burma. He worked the next 12 years for his father-in-law, Charles W. Patten, selling and servicing John Deere Farm Equipment in Sterling. In 1957, he joined State Mutual Life Assurance Company of America, retiring in 1979 after 22 years in building maintenance.



While in Sterling, Stuart was a member of the First Church in Sterling. He served as a volunteer firefighter with the Sterling Fire Department and was a founding member of the Sterling Firefighter's Ambulance Association. He was a Sterling Light Department commissioner and a member of the Planning Board. He was also a member of the Trinity Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Clinton. He loved traveling and spending time in his yard and garden.



He is survived by his two sons, Charles P. Schmohl and his wife Bonnie of Princeton and Robert S. Schmohl of Broomfield, CO; two step-daughters, Susan M. Lamoreaux of Meredith, NH and Karen T. Bowman of Wyomissing, PA; three grandchildren, Pat Schmohl and his wife, Jen, Liz Hilton and her husband, Jason, Megan Jensen and her husband, Erik; six great-grandchildren, Chip and Jayna Schmohl, Grace and Max Hilton, Owen and Shane Jensen; his sister, Elizabeth Geissler of Storrs, CT; and nieces and a nephew. Besides his parents, Stuart is predeceased by his first wife, Elizabeth F. (Patten) Schmohl, his second wife, Ruth M. (Bruner) Schmohl, and his brother, Richard Schmohl.



Funeral services are private and will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sterling Firefighters Association, P.O. Box 1081, Sterling, MA 01564. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road, Sterling.
