HOLDEN – Ellen (Sterner) Olson, 91, of Newell Road, passed away at home on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 surrounded by her loving family.
Her husband of 57 years, Henry T. Olson, died in 1997. She is survived by her children, Dr. P. Richard Olson and his wife Becky, Virginia A. Warden and her husband George, Steven G. Olson and his wife Cheryl and Christine O. Suit and her husband Curtis; a sister, Beverly Poland and her husband Donald; and 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. A brother, Paul Sterner predeceased her. She was born in Worcester on Valentine's Day, 1919, the daughter of Adolph and Florence (Anderson) Sterner and had lived in Holden her entire life.
Ellen was known as "The Cookie Lady" by generations of children at Dawson School where she managed the cafeteria from the 1960's until she retired in 1981. She was a charter member of the Chaffin Women's Club and a 7th degree member of the Holden Grange.
Her greatest joy in life was her family and the time spent together. Watching the Red Sox and the Celtics, with her cats beside her, gave her reason to cheer and things to talk about with her family. She will be greatly missed.
A celebration of Ellen's life will be in June at a date and time to be announced. A private family graveside service will be held at Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the UMass Memorial Foundation, Hospice, 365 Plantation Street, Suite 100, Worcester, MA 01605. Funeral services are under the care of Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden.
