Stanley L. Miller

June 3, 1926 — January 11, 2014

PAXTON – Stanley L. Miller, 87, passed away with his family by his side on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester after an illness. He was born in Worcester in 1926, the son of Harold and Frances (Thompson) Miller.

Stan graduated from Worcester Academy and was inducted into the U.S. Army in October, 1944 where he served his country as a PFC during WWII. After his honorable military discharge, he went to WPI where he played collegiate football while earning his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. For over thirty years he dedicated his career to the Wright Line Co, in Worcester and retired as a production engineer.

In 1954, Stan married the love of his life, Dora Mae Eddy and together they raised their family in their Paxton home. He was a senior deacon and head usher at the First Congregational Church of Paxton. Stan was an active member in the Paxton community; he would be seen delivering Meals on Wheels or enjoying Silver Sneakers at the sports center along with walking countless miles on Route 56. He volunteered many hours building the Mass Central Rail Trail, Wachusett Greenways. Stan the Man was a ski instructor at Pine Ridge in Barre for many years, sharing his love of the sport. He enjoyed sailing and tennis and made sure the family enjoyed it with him. He coached basketball, baseball and hockey. Paxton’s first girls softball league was started by Stan. A nickname (Woody) would exemplify his craftiness through wood creations that blessed many. Family and friends know these as Dorastan creations. Stan and Dora poured their love into grandchildren, family, many close friends, and the community. Stan’s life was blessed and full, leaving a legacy of love, encouragement and devotion to his family that will be greatly missed.

Stan’s beloved wife of 59 years, Dora Mae (Eddy) Miller, predeceased him on October 27, 2013. He leaves his son, Craig S. Miller of Paxton; two daughters, Rebecca M. Smith and her husband, Clifford of Speculator, NY and Deborah E. Knepper and her husband, Douglas of Princeton; 5 grandchildren; nephews and nieces; grandnieces and grandnephews; great grandson; and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother, Gordon Miller of Shrewsbury.

A memorial service celebrating Stan’s life will be held on Saturday, January 18 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Congregational Church of Paxton, 1 Church Street, Paxton.
