WORCESTER – Sophie George, age 94, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 10th, at Lutheran Rehabilitation & Skilled Care Center in Worcester. Born in Bradford, PA, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Angelina (John) George.
After graduating from high school in Bradford, PA, at just 19 years old, she told her mother she was moving to Worcester to live with her sister Naomi and brother-in-law, Cap. Soon after relocating, she started working at Parker Manufacturing in Worcester. Through hard work and dedication, Sophie moved her way up throughout her 42-year tenure at Parker Manufacturing to become Director of Quality Control, a position she flourished in.
Later in her career and during some leadership restructuring, Sophie decided to retire at just 62. In her retirement, she truly made the best of her newly acquired free time. She traveled all over the world, visiting China, Russia and to her beloved family’s home country of Albania. She enjoyed summers in Maine and winters in Florida. She loved being the life of the party. On many occasions, Sophie was known to jump on stage and grab the microphone.
Sophie was a proud Albanian and member of St. Mary’s Assumption Albanian Orthodox Church in Worcester, where she was an active member and attended the yearly festival.
Sophie is survived by her nephew and longtime caregiver, Mark Dionis and his wife, Sandra of Leominster, and many other nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she is predeceased by brother, Gust George, and her sisters, Alexandria Bardho, Naomi Veshi, Catherine Costa, Elaine Dionis, Mary George, Cleo George, Anna Pillary and Jean George.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Sophie’s family from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Tuesday, April 15th, at St. Mary’s Assumption Albanian Orthodox Church, 535 Salisbury St., Worcester. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 am at church with interment following at Hope Cemetery in Worcester.
