Shirley V. (Johnson) Singley

March 26, 1925 — March 16, 2006

WORCESTER – Shirley V. (Johnson) Singley, 80, of Worcester, died Thursday, March 16, 2006, in Saint Vincent Hospital. Her husband of 27 years, Martin C. Singley, Jr., died in 1973. She was born in Worcester, a daughter of the late Edward T. and Dagny O. (Wennerstrom) Johnson. Her sister, Mae Foley, passed away in 2005.

Mrs. Singley was raised in Greenfield, graduated from Greenfield High School in 1942 and from the Chamberlain School of Retailing in Boston in 1945. She was an accomplished writer, having written a number of books and published several articles. In her later years she took up painting. She was a member of Greendale Peoples Church and formerly a member of the Adams Square Congregational Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. She and her husband were inspirational leaders in the Faith At Work organization.

Mrs. Singley is survived by her children, Karen B. Cathcart of Worcester, The Rev. Martin C. Singley III of Loudon, Tennessee and Stephen A. Singley of Holden; six grandchildren, Dr. Andrew Jones-Cathcart, Peter Singley, Bethany (Singley) Hayden, and Matthew, Christa and Benjamin Singley; two great-grandchildren, Ryan Singley and Stellan Cathcart; several nieces and nephews, and many cherished friends.

Calling hours for Mrs. Singley will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 19, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. A Memorial Service celebrating her life and God’s grace will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 20, in the Greendale Peoples Church, 25 Francis Street, Worcester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Belarusian Orphan Fund, c/o Covenant Evangelical Church, P.O. Box 213, Barre, MA 01005, or a charity of one’s choice.
