HOLDEN - Shirley M. (Burrell) Muzzey, 98, beloved wife of the late Wellman Muzzey, passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her family, on Wednesday, January 4, 2022. Born and raised in Worcester, she was a daughter of the late Everett and Helen (Handlin) Burrell.
While in her senior year at Commerce High School, Shirley was recruited to support the war effort. She was placed at Rockwell Sprinkler Company where she assisted toolmakers in calibrating the bullet making machines. Shirley grew up next door to her future husband, Wellman, and the childhood sweethearts were married on February 17, 1945. Together they finished Wellman’s service obligation at Parris Island, South Carolina. They settled in Holden where together they raised their two daughters. Always responsible and thrifty, she worked many jobs to accommodate her family's needs. Shirley was proud of her position as Head Teller for Worcester County National Bank on Park Avenue in Worcester.
Shirley was a member of St. George Church in Worcester for many years. In her spare time, she enjoyed ceramics, knitting, crocheting, puzzles and playing cards. Shirley loved going to the beach, especially Hampton Beach as well as Wabasso Beach in FL. The only thing she loved more than the beach was going out for “a little lunch” or dancing with Wellman.
Shirley and Wellman enjoyed spending winters in Barefoot Bay, Florida where they found a large and active group of friends. They traveled widely and danced every Saturday night at the Moose Lodge, truly enjoying their retirement years.
She will be lovingly missed and remembered by her two daughters, Debra Stone and her husband, Arthur of Sebastian, FL and Pamela Dorazio of Holden, with whom she lived; her five grandchildren, Brian Stone, Garrett Stone and his partner, Terri Keenan, Devin Stone and his wife, Hannah, Cayla Dorazio and Maura Burdulis and her husband, Matthew; and her great-grandchildren, Sean Stone, Abigail Stone, Gianna Dorazio, Elijah Stone, Owen Delcourt and Zoey Delcourt, many nieces and nephews and her cousin Eunice. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Warren Stines and her always supportive, Aunt Anna.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 21 at St. George Church, 38 Brattle Street, Worcester. Burial will follow at St. John’s Cemetery, 260 Cambridge Street, Worcester. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Jewish Healthcare Hospice, 629 Salisbury Street, Worcester, MA 01609. Arrangements are under the care of Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. To share a memory or offer an online condolence, please visit the "Tribute Wall" on this page.
