HUBBARDSTON – Shirley L. (Bashaw) Handy, 74, of 31 Old Boston Turnpike, died Wednesday, November 3, 2004, in Heywood Hospital, Gardner.

Her husband of 51 years, Roy E. Handy, Jr., died in 1999. She was the loving mother of four daughters, Jane Whitmore of Athol, Paula Stasukelis of Hubbardston, Lori Studt of Gardner and Karen Roth of Littleton; four sons, Wayne of Hubbardston, Brian of Barre, and Walter and Warren of Gardner; two sisters, Dorothy Paquin of Lunenburg and Mary Hatstat of Rutland; a brother, Charles of Spencer; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. A sister, Vivian Mixter, and a brother, Paul Bashaw, predeceased her. She was born in Lancaster on February 18, 1930, the daughter of Charles and Lollie (Buff) Bashaw, was raised in Rutland and lived in Hubbardston most of her life.

Mrs. Handy drove school buses for Mac-Mae Bus Company for many years. She was a Past Matron and member of the Cradle Rock Chapter No. 125, Order of the Eastern Star in Barre, and an Honorary Member of the Barre Assembly Rainbow Advisory Board. She was also a charter member of the Civic Association Scholarship Committee of Hubbardston and the Hubbardston Golden Agers.

The funeral service for Mrs. Handy will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 9, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Burial will follow in Rural Glenn Cemetery, 28 Worcester Road (Rte. 68), Hubbardston. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, November 8, in the funeral home. The Eastern Star will conduct a service at 7 p.m. during calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Civic Association Scholarship of Hubbardston, P.O. Box 375, Hubbardston, MA 01452; or the Hubbardston Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 490, Hubbardston.
