Shirley (Ebenstein) Garshman

Biography
WORCESTER – Shirley R. (Ebenstein) Garshman, 92, of Lincoln, MA died on Tuesday, December 8th.   Shirley will be remembered for her deep, unfailing love and commitment to her family, brilliant intellect, and lifelong pursuit of all knowledge.   She leaves her daughter, Dr. Jennifer Garshman­Hertzel, her son­in­law, Daniel Hertzel, and her two grandchildren, Hannah Rose Hertzel and Samuel Henry Hertzel of Lexington, MA. She also leaves a long time companion, Herbert Botwin of Lincoln; a brother, Norman Ebenstein and his wife, Shirley of Boca Raton, FL; and a dear friend Nathan Margolis, of Norwich, VT. Her husband, Saul Garshman, died in 1972.   Shirley was born in New York City, the daughter of Samuel and Jeannette (Aronson) Ebenstein and was raised in Worcester, where she lived for most of her life. She moved to Boston in 1996 and then to Lincoln to be close to her beloved children and grandchildren.   She was an early feminist, before there was such a term. She graduated from Vassar College with a dual degree in anthropology and sociology, where she was a student of Margaret Mead. She received a Masters in Social Work from Boston University and continued her education, adding two more Masters degrees while raising a family, and continued to take university classes after moving to Boston. She worked on the original edition of Our Bodies, Our Selves, and when newly widowed in 1975, set out on a cross-­country car trip by herself.   Shirley was a passionate traveler, visiting the Peruvian Amazon River by small boat with the Explorers’ Club, taking an elephant expedition in the mountains of Thailand, visiting Indonesia, Korea, Morocco, Israel, most of Western Europe, and more. She remained adventurous throughout her life.   In addition, Shirley was an avid gardener, gourmet cook, and artist. She rescued and rehabilitated numerous wild animals. She was a docent at the Philadelphia Zoo.Her favorite pastime was performing in community theater as an actress, singer, and dancer.   Throughout her life, Shirley was committed to being actively involved in her community. She was a long time member of Temple Emanuel and very active in its Sisterhood, B’Nai Brith Women, Hadassah and the National Council of Jewish Women.   GRAVESIDE FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD AT 12:30 PM ON SUNDAY, DECEMBER 13TH IN B’NAI BRITH CEMETERY ON ST. JOHN’S ROAD IN WORCESTER UNDER THE DIRECTION OF RICHARD PERLMAN OF MILES FUNERAL HOME OF HOLDEN.   Memorial Observances will be held Sunday from 3:30pm - ­8pm, December 13th at the residence of Dr. Jennifer Garshman­ - Hertzel and Daniel Hertzel at 6 Carmel Circle in Lexington.   The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Pets For The Elderly Foundation, 530 E.
