PRINCETON - Shawn C. Kelley, 74, passed away on Monday, July 31, 2023, after a lengthy battle with interstitial lung disease (agent orange) at HealthCare Alliance - Leominster Hospital. Born in Waltham and raised in Sudbury, Shawn was the son of Howard and Eleanor (Johnson) Kelley.
He will be lovingly remembered and missed by his wife of 49 years, Louise (Polly) Kelley; a sister, Christine Porter and her husband, Dennis of Clinton; a sister-in-law, JoAnn Coyle and her husband, Donald of Middletown, CT; two nephews, a niece, and several cousins; and his beloved chocolate lab, "Nugget."
In 1968 at age of 18, Shawn enlisted in the U. S. Army and served in Vietnam where he received the Purple Heart. Upon returning home, he joined the Sudbury Fire Department as a firefighter/EMT for 13 years. He spent the following 42 years working as a truck driver for Lombardo Loam & Gravel Co. in Acton and D.M. Hudson Inc. in Sterling, retiring in 2018.
Shawn was an amateur ham radio operator and enthusiast and enjoyed speaking to people around the world. His call sign was WB1AEL. In his late 40's, Shawn took up flying and received his private pilots license at Sterling Airport. Although he rarely got Louise to fly with him, he spent many summer weekends in his plane.
He was a proud 50-year member of the United Brethren Lodge of Masons in Marlborough. Shawn will be remembered as faithful, hardworking, and meticulous with everything he did.
Shawn's family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Health Care Alliance - Leominster Hospital for their compassion, acts of kindness, and professionalism.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Shawn's family from 4 to 7 pm on Wednesday, August 9, at Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Rd., Sterling. A committal service with military honors will take place at 2 pm on Thursday, August 10, at the Massachusetts Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in Winchendon. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to United Brethren Masonic Lodge at 8 Newton Street, Marlborough, MA 01752.
