HOLDEN – Guy Shaw Elmer, Jr., 83, died on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 after a short illness. He was born in Warwick, Rhode Island, the son of Guy Shaw and Lena (Martin) Elmer. He graduated from Holden High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served aboard the U.S.S. Bombard and the U.S.S. Cleveland during World War II.
He leaves his wife of 60 years, Geraldine (Foley) Elmer; two daughters, Pamela Williams and her husband Stephan of Worcester and Patricia Kasper and her husband Kenneth of Lakeland, Florida; two grandchildren, Benjamin Williams of Boston and Jacquelyn Kasper of Holden; and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Donald and Kathleen Johnson of Barre. Two sisters, Beatrice Johnson and Doris Sherblom predeceased him.
Guy lived most of his life in Holden. He began his career as a custodian in the Holden Post Office, and then became a mail carrier working alongside his mother who was a postal clerk. He was appointed Postmaster of the Holden branch in 1976, retiring in 1985. He belonged to the National Association of Postmasters and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was also a member of the Rufus Putnam Lodge of Masons in Rutland, the Aletheia Grotto in Worcester and the Greendale Retired Men's Club.
He enjoyed working outside at his Holden property, tending to his flowers and vegetable garden. He was a devoted family man and loved spending time with his grandchildren. Guy was a kind and caring man who was always there to help others in need.
Honoring Guy's wishes, there are no calling hours and burial will be private in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Lung Cancer Research, 10 Brookline Place West, 6th Floor, Brookline, MA 02445. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden.
