STERLING - Sharon A. (Peeso) Smith, 77, beloved wife of the late Philip Smith, passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her loving family, on Thursday, May 4, 2023. Born in Fitchburg and raised in Sterling, she was the only daughter of the late Elmer and Sylvia (Ovaska) Peeso.
After graduating from Wachusett High School, Sharon enrolled in hairdressing school and was a talented hairdresser during her younger years. She met her future husband Philip, and they were married in 1971. They remained in Sterling where together they raised their son, Daniel. While raising her family, Sharon worked as a teller for several local banks. In her later years, she was a driver for Village Transportation in Sterling, a job she loved. She retired in 2020 after several years of dedicated service to the children of Sterling and the surrounding towns.
In her spare time, she enjoyed cooking and entertaining family and friends. Sharon was always ready for a game of Pitch or a challenging puzzle. She was an avid reader and could often be found reading the latest murder mystery by James Patterson. Sharon's door was always open, and she embraced anyone who entered. The welcoming front porch of her big brown house was always adorned with hanging flower baskets or decorated elaborately for the Christmas season, her favorite time of the year.
She will be lovingly missed and remembered by her son, Daniel Smith and his wife, Lisa of Sterling; her two granddaughters, Stephanie Smith and her partner, Brandon Hamilton of Sterling and Cassandra Smith and her partner, Frank Finn, Jr. of Sebago, ME; and two sisters-in-law, Joanne Peeso of West Boylston and Jeanne Peeso of Northborough. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was predeceased by her three brothers, William, Robert and Richard Peeso.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff at UMass Memorial Hospital, and to VNA Hospice for the kind and compassionate care she received while in their care.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather with her family from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, May 8 in the Miles-Sterling Funeral & Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road, Sterling. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 9 in the First Church in Sterling, 6 Meetinghouse Hill Road, Sterling.
