RUTLAND -Sharon A. (Marchand) Berndt, 56, of Rutland passed away surrounded by the family she so dearly loved on Wednesday, January 14, 2015, at Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester, following a brief courageous battle with cancer. Sharon graduated from Holy Family High School in Fitchburg and attended Mt. Wachusett Community College. Born and raised in Fitchburg, Sharon was the daughter of the late Ovila A. and Lorraine M. (Boudreau) Marchand.
Devoted is the word that truly describes who Sharon was. She deeply cared for her husband, children, siblings, extended family and friends, as well as her community. She leaves her husband of 27 years, Bruce E. Berndt; her three children, Derek F., Melissa S. and Samantha M. Berndt all of Rutland; her three siblings, Steve Marchand of Maynard, Kevin Marchand and his wife, Julie of Colchester, VT and Debbie Fitzgerald and her husband, Danny of Fitchburg; her mother-in-law, Simone Berndt of Fitchburg; her sister-in-law, Donna Theirrien of North Oxford, her brother-in-law, Wayne F. Berndt, O.F.M. Cap of Japan; her nieces and nephews, Michelle, Brian, Stephen, Matthew, Alicia, Nick, PJ, Katelyn, and Kyle. She was predeceased by her father-in-law, Francis Berndt and her brother-in-law, Robert Theirrien.
Her care for those who needed help was always ever present. She was the current Director of Rutland’s Council on Aging. She passionately volunteered her time and was a founding member of the Friends of the Mercy Centre, Inc., and was presently serving as its president. She was a committed advocate in keeping the Mercy Centre open for the last several years. Sharon also assisted local parents developing individual educational plans for their children with disabilities. She was instrumental in the planning of the new public library in Rutland and served on the building committee. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Parish.
Sharon was the guiding strength for so many things. She will always be remembered for her love and determination.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Sharon’s family from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, January 18, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, January 19, at St. Patrick’s Church, 258 Main St., Rutland. Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Fitchburg.
