Scott L. Mackay

September 24, 1954 — March 3, 2016

RUTLAND - “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything” ~Plato. The rich life of Scott Mackay, filled with love, dedication to family and friends, and a never ending passion for sharing music through his playing, came to an unexpected end on Thursday, March 3, 2016. Scott was born in Honolulu, HI, a son of the late Bruce A. and Margaret J. (O’Connell) Mackay. He was raised on Long Island attending Ward Melville High School, and later graduated from Pinkerton Academy, Derry, NH. He attended Plymouth State College, but the draw to play the drums, something he had become accomplished at since learning to play at a young age, changed the direction of his life. His talent led to a touring career through 38 states and Canada with several of the bands he played with, including “Pizazz”, “Banned in Boston”, “Group Therapy” and “The Help Wanted Band”. He also enjoyed a long career with Ackerley Communications of Stoneham, MA and in his later working years with the Rutland DPW before retiring in 2014. Scott loved to spend time with his family in Winter Harbor, Maine, a place near and dear to him, as well as being able to take trips with his wife, Arline, to any number of New England destinations. He was an avid reader, enjoyed solving crossword puzzles, and spending time with his four furry friends, his beloved cats. Scott was an accomplished athlete in many sports, but felt most at home playing third base on the softball diamond. Scott will be lovingly missed by his beloved wife of 36 years, Arline (Ljungberg); his two sons, Brooks Mackay and his fiancée, Kali Barnette of Rutland and Brandon L. Mackay and his companion, Kaitlin Straut of Sterling; his three siblings, Bruce A. Mackay, Jr. of St. Louis, MO, Mark E. Mackay and his life partner, Marybeth Carney of Framingham and Barbara Campbell and her husband, Michael of Winter Harbor, ME; his father-in-law, David E. Ljungberg of Jefferson; sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, grand-nephews, cousins, extended family, and devoted friends.
