Biography
WORCESTER - DR. SAUL LERNER, a Worcester physician, board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, passed away on December 8, 2014. He was 93 years old. Dr. Lerner was educated at Boston University and after graduating Phi Beta Kappa from the College of Liberal Arts, he attended Boston University School of Medicine where he graduated Alpha Omega Alpha (Honor Society). He did his Medical Residency in Obstetrics at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston and his residency in Gynecology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. He started a private practice in OB-GYN in Worcester, MA in 1955 where, over his long career, delivered more than 6,000 babies and earned the respect of his patients and colleagues for his dedication to the health of women. He was affiliated with Worcester Memorial Hospital and University of Massachusetts Medical Center and was appointed Professor of OB-GYN at University of Massachusetts Medical Center.
Before his medical career, he served as a 1st Lieutenant in the US Air Force 1942-1944 as a communications officer, serving in North Africa.
He had a long career. Nationally, in the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG), he served as chairman of Massachusetts Section of ACOG, then chairman of District One (all of New England and eastern Canada). He served as a member of the Executive Board of ACOG and chaired the Committee on Health Care Delivery of ACOG, followed by Chairman of the Professional Liability Committee for ACOG. He served on ACOG’s Committee on Future Development. He was a member of the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists and the American Fertility Society. He was a Founding Fellow of the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons and also a Founding Fellow of the North American Menopause Society and a Councillor in the Massachusetts Medical Society. He also served as a spokesman for ACOG at a Congressional hearing on the Joint Ways and Means Committee. He was the Editor of the International Correspondence Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
His proudest moment in his career was when, in May of 1985, he was presented with the Award for Outstanding Services by ACOG at the Convention Center in Washington, DC.
During his renowned career, he delivered scientific addresses to forty five medical meetings, including several in foreign countries (Israel, Moscow, and Canada). He authored a chapter in a book on gynecologic microsurgery and a chapter in a textbook of Reoperative Gynecologic Surgery. He served as a Visiting Professor at several Medical Schools.
He discontinued the practice of Obstetrics at age 65 and, at age 70, discontinued operative gynecology confining his practice to office gynecology. He fully retired at age 75 and moved to Cape Cod.
His whole life was characterized by the pursuit of excellence.
Dr. Lerner grew up in Dorchester, the son of Max and Rebecca (Rudnick) Lerner. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years , Shirley (Milman), his daughters, Lenore Lerner of Worcester and Lisa Lerner Balegno and her husband Sergio of Marstons Mills and his granddaughters, Ashley Bronson of Boston and Rachel Bronson Holmgren and her husband Paul of Sandwich. He is also survived by his brother Edward Lerner and his wife Joan of Newton and now Hingham. He was predeceased by his brother Warren Lerner of Durham, NC and is survived by Warren’s wife, Fran, as well as four nieces and a nephew, all of whom he loved dearly.
He and Shirley enjoyed a wonderful life together and had an enviable marriage, completely and totally devoted to one another. His greatest joy later in life was his two granddaughters.
Among several hobbies, the two that gave him the most pleasure and pride were vegetable gardening and photography. He and Shirley traveled extensively, planning many trips around his love of nature photography.
He enjoyed taking and teaching classes at the Academy of Lifelong Learning after his retirement to the Cape. He was an avid reader, always anxious to learn about history and current events.
FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD AT 10 A.M. ON WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 10, IN TEMPLE EMANUEL SINAI, 280 MAY STREET, WORCESTER UNDER THE DIRECTION OF RICHARD PERLMAN OF MILES FUNERAL HOME OF HOLDEN. Burial will be in B’Nai B’rith Cemetery, 55 St. John's Road, Worcester.
A reception for Memorial Observance for Wednesday afternoon will be announced at the time of the funeral.
