Biography

WORCESTER - Sanford D. Weinert, MD, 92, passed away at The Willows of Worcester on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 under the loving care of his family.  Sanford was born in Providence, Rhode Island, the son of Joseph and Esther (Epstein) Weinert, and spent most of his childhood in Mattapan.  He and his twin brother Frank were the youngest of four children and lifelong best friends until Frank passed away five years ago.
Sanford graduated from Boston Latin School and then Boston College, after attending Holy Cross.  He served as a Lt. Commander in the Navy during World War II, then served in the Naval Reserve and was a recipient of the Presidential Unit Citation.  After getting a Master’s Degree in Biology from Harvard University, he got his medical degree at Chicago Medical School.  After completing his surgical internship in Washington, D.C. and his urologic residency at the Boston VA Hospital, Sanford moved to Worcester in 1958, where he practiced as a urologist in Worcester for over 35 years, first in private practice and then at the Fallon Clinic.
He married Simone Solomont, the love of his life, in 1956.  They met when she was only a teenager, and stayed in each other’s minds until they met again when she was in college.  They had 56 extremely happy years together until her death in 2012.  He and Simone loved to travel, especially to Europe, but also visited China, Thailand, and Australia.  He loved learning languages and was able to converse in more than six other languages.
Up until recently, he stayed healthy, exercising regularly at the Greendale YMCA and keeping his mind sharp by attending classes at Worcester State University.  He was an enthusiastic reader of non-fiction, especially history, and regularly visited the Worcester Public Library to borrow books.  Until his 80’s he was an avid tennis player and, more recently, enjoying playing bocce, croquet, chess, and board games with his grandchildren.
He cherished his family above all else and leaves behind his three daughters, Stacey L. Weinert of Worcester, Ashley K. Weinert, MD and her partner, Melinda Lansdowne of California, and Hilary W. Hershman and her husband, Marc of Newton Centre;  three grandchildren, Jason M. Hershman of Boston, Leora E. Hershman of Israel and Dana J. Weinert of California; three step-grandchildren, Elena, Mycaela and Grant Hagstrom, all of California; two sisters-in-law, Shelah Jaeger and Sydney Karloff and her husband, Alvin, and may loving nephews and nieces.  Besides his wife, he is predeceased by two brothers, Morton and Frank Weinert and a sister, Berenice Jacobson.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, December 15, at Congregation Beth Israel, 15 Jamesbury Drive in Worcester under the direction of Miles Funeral Home of Holden.  Burial will follow at Sharon Memorial Park, 120 Canton Street, Sharon.
Memorial observances will be held at the home of Hilary and Marc Hershman in Newton Centre on Saturday from 5-8 pm, Sunday in the residence at The Willows of Worcester from 2-8 pm, and again on Monday through Thursday at Hilary and Marc’s home from 7-9 pm.  Minyan services will be held each evening at 7:30.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Alzheimer’s Association.
