OAKHAM/PAXTON – Samuel F.H. Goodwin, 83, died peacefully at home under the care of his family on Friday, September 2, 2016. He was born in Worcester, the son of Gladys (Clayton) and Haven W. Goodwin. He lived in Oakham for most of his life before moving to Paxton in 2008.
Sam is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 30 years, Barbara A. (Horan) Goodwin; his son, Kenneth Goodwin and his wife, Ann McDonald of Barre; his daughters, Suzanne Harty and her husband, Alan of Barre and Barbara Tappin of Hardwick and her companion, Peter Markert; his step daughters, Deborah A. Lamachia of Oxford and Sandra A. Guries of Worcester; his step son, Timothy J. Walsh of Auburn; 16 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
Sam graduated from Barre High School with the class of 1950. He went on to attend UMass Amherst, before earning his Master’s degree in education from Worcester State College. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps and was discharged as a First Lieutenant. Sam taught math for the fifth and sixth grades at the Flagg Street School in Worcester for 35 years. He served the community in Barre as a Little League Manager and as Leader of Boy Scout Troop 26. Sam was an avid outdoorsman and loved fishing, skiing, ice skating and wood crafting. He was a ski instructor for several years in Barre and Oakham. Sam enjoyed many years of Polka dancing with his wife, Barbara. He was a devoted baseball fan, cheering on the Red Sox with enthusiasm.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 7th at Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. A funeral service honoring and celebrating Sam’s life will be held at the funeral home at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 8th. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, Old Turnpike Rd., Oakham.
